Kariobangi North MCA Munuve accused of bursary fraud

Kariobangi North Ward Member of the County Assembly Joel Munuve is in the receiving end after claims emerged over his alleged selective issuance of bursaries meant for needy students in his ward.

Munuve, in a video released on social media, claimed that Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja withheld funds meant for bursaries in his ward appealing for support in what is a blatant lie as the bursary funds are released to all 85 wards on the same basis in the county.

The Kariobangi North MCA has been accused by a section of his ward residents of selling bursaries meant for his ward to the highest bidder in a wide scheme that involves a former Nairobi Education County Executive Committee member and nominated MCAs who are well known to register ghost schools and other private institutions which go on to benefit from the Ksh 7 millions ward bursary kitty.

The first term MCA, who only benefitted from a fall out within Azimio in the nomination process has learnt that he will not be able to recapture the seat at the next general elections and resorted into giving nominated MCAs part of his bursary kitty who in turn sell it to the highest bidder.   

He is also accused of having bursary cheques written to imaginary schools that dont exist in a plot that is well choreghraphed by the former CEC.

The cartels, which infiltrated the education system in the last county government regime, are accused of registering imaginary schools which benefit from the bursaries at the expence of local residents and have ganged up with Munuve to fight the county government.

Our investigations into the allegations led us to Kariobangi Market where we sought to get the views of the residents.

According to Magdaline Awiti, a hair dresser at the market and parent at Marura Primary School, her son Byron Onyango qualified for a bursary but she has since stopped following up with the MCA’s office after she notice that bursaries  are being given to people from one community in the area.

Solomon Maina, a matatu driver said: “We cannot say that we have an MCA here when other wards are getting seven million for bursaries and we get none. I got tired of sending my wife to line up there for no reason.”

The Kariobangi North MCA is accused of only giving bursaries to people from one community in the area.
