Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary nominee Eric Muriithi Muuga does not own a car.

He stated that his wealth is composed of  investments in farming and land, further responding with a stern ‘No’ when asked by committee member and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed asked whether he has a car.

“My net worth is Ksh.31 million. I come from a region that is engaged in farming so I’ve invested in lands and planted crops like tea, coffee, bananas, miraa,”  said Muuga.

“I have chosen to invest instead of buying a car, to start with,” he told MP Mohamed.

Speaker Moses Wetangula posed to him: “If you’re approved and appointed, and you get into the office, and tomorrow a major contractor in the water sector comes and offers you a car, will you take it?”

The CS noted with an emphatic “No!”

Muuga, who made the revelation when appeared before Parliament’s Committee on Appointments for vetting on Friday, is also the youngest CS nominee at just 32 years old.

Speaking during his vetting by the National Assembly Committee on Appointments, the 32-year-old also said he will work with accountability and integrity.

Muuga said he has worked at a consulting firm where his job related to the Ministry of Water.

He specialised in water resources engineering for his Masters Degree at the University of Nairobi.

He told the Committee that he has eight to nine years of experience in water and sanitation.

“In the process of carrying out my daily activities, I have worked at all levels mostly in the private sector. I’ve worked and engaged with stakeholders to Water development works as a consultative,” he said.

Muuga said he has progressed in his career growth from being an intern to a design engineer.

Currently, the nominee said he is an assistant resident engineer and in some instances, an assistant project engineer.

Muuga said he is duly registered with the Engineers Board of Kenya as a professional engineer and with the Institution of Engineers of Kenya as a corporate member.

“During my work activities, I have developed a passion to ensure that every Kenyan in my little spot that I’ve served so far has access to water which is a human and constitutional right,” he said.

Muuga noted that service to his fellow Kenyans is service to God, adding that if given the opportunity, he would do all he can to ensure access to water for all.
