In an official statement issued today, the Government of Kenya, through its Spokesman, has called for national calm, justice, and unity following recent confrontations between police officers and members of the public.

Addressing the media, the Government Spokesman reiterated Kenya’s commitment to upholding constitutional values, particularly the right to peaceful assembly and expression, while cautioning that such rights must be exercised responsibly. “We are a democratic nation governed by the rule of law. At this critical moment, sobriety, calm, and restraint must prevail,” he said.

The Spokesman confirmed that the Government is aware of an incident in which a police officer allegedly shot a civilian, adding that the victim is recuperating in hospital. He assured the public that a thorough investigation is already underway through the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), emphasizing that “justice will be served, and accountability pursued in accordance with the law.”

However, the Government also raised concern over actions by certain groups who, while purporting to protest, have engaged in unlawful behavior—including the provocation of police officers, destruction of property, and the disruption of businesses. The Spokesman denounced such acts, noting that they “do not reflect the spirit of genuine protest” and only serve to escalate tensions, endangering both civilians and law enforcement personnel.

“Let it be known—violence from any side is unacceptable,” the Spokesman declared. “Our democracy allows room for dissent, but not for disorder or disobedience. Responding to wrongs with further wrongs only perpetuates a cycle of chaos.”

Citizens were urged to remain calm and to place their trust in national institutions—including IPOA, the judiciary, and Parliament—to carry out independent and impartial investigations. The Government further appealed to political, civil society, and community leaders to promote peace, dialogue, and national understanding during this sensitive time.

The Spokesman also cautioned political actors against exploiting the current situation for personal or political gain. “Inciting the public or using moments of national tension to settle political scores is both irresponsible and dangerous. Leadership must rise to the occasion, anchored in integrity, patriotism, and reverence to God.”

In line with a forward-looking approach, the Government is encouraging Parliament to enact legislation that safeguards the right to protest while ensuring that public order and the rights of other citizens are not infringed. This includes the possible designation of specific public spaces for lawful demonstrations—a step seen as balancing constitutional freedoms with civic responsibility.

Concluding the address, the Government Spokesman made a passionate appeal for unity: “Let us not unravel the progress we have made as a nation. Let us rise above our divisions and recommit to the values that bind us as one people under God.”

The statement marks a decisive moment in the country’s political discourse, as the Government emphasizes a path of justice, restraint, and nationhood in the face of mounting pressure and political agitation.
